LOCAL MUSEUM WORK
The provincial museum researcher at the Museum of Ostrobothnia provides advisory and consulting services to more than 100 local museums within the museum's region of operation. The provincial museum researcher is also an expert on matters concerning the cultural environment and local history in Vaasa and the municipalities in the region of Ostrobothnia as well as in Karijoki and Teuva.
The provincial museum researcher cooperates with representatives of the National Board of Antiquities on decisions regarding financial support for local museums. See www.nba.fi
The work of the provincial museum consists largely of the development of the local museums and the provision of advisory services, as well as developing cooperation with associations with the aim of preserving and maintaining the local culture.
More than 100 museums in Ostrobothnia
The provincial museum researcher is responsible for the development of museum work in the region, in collaboration with other institutions. This involves acting as a guiding consultant for approximately a hundred museum associations which in turn are responsible for about 170 museums.
The majority of the workload is allocated to museums receiving discretionary government support. Museums owned by municipalities and associations or foundations are eligible for consultation visits free of charge. Telephone and e-mail consultation is also available to owners of private museum collections.
The aim of the provincial museum is to be a data bank for the local museums. The advisory services provided include guidelines on storage and cataloguing of artefacts as well as how to plan and fund exhibitions. In matters regarding restoration of museum buildings the building researcher at the museum is available for consultation, while the museum's conservationists offer advice on matters concerning artefacts and art objects. In matters relating to cataloguing of photographs, the museum's photo archive can be of assistance.
Collaborative efforts, the museum journal and museum portal
Small local museums often face similar problems, so developing cooperation between the museums is vital. In collaboration with other bodies, the provincial museum organizes training for local museums, such as museum symposiums or regional seminars. The provincial museum also publishes the periodical Kapsäkki, which is an informative bulletin containing news and facts about cultural environments and museums in Ostrobothnia. It also contains articles about art, natural science and history.
The provincial museum has developed the Kaarle I database as a tool for managing local museum collections. The Ostrobothnia museum portal, which is managed by the provincial museum, provides basic information about the museums in Ostrobothnia and parts of Southern Ostrobothnia. It is the first museum portal in Finland which is also available in Russian. The museum portal also has a Facebook page. Please register your museum in the portal, if it is not yet included!
